Kiwanis for Katrina’s
Children
The United States has experienced one of the greatest natural
disasters in our history. We empathize with the pain and suffering of tens of
thousands of Americans in the Gulf region. We worry about those Kiwanis
members in the affected areas. They are all very much in our hearts and
minds. Recognizing our Kiwanis priority of Young Children Priority One, we are especially concerned about
the on-going needs of the Children living in the affected areas as well as those
evacuated to other places.
On September 3,
2005, the Metro Kansas City
Kiwanis Council, representing the 778
Kiwanians in 29 Kiwanis clubs in Kansas Division 9 and
Missouri-Arkansas Divisions 3 and 4, established a new Young Children’s Priority One project for the metro area, named “Kiwanis for Katrina’s Children.” The Council invites all Kiwanians and Clubs
in the three divisions to participate.
The initial goals of the project are:
- Raise at least $100,000 in the near term
- Set up a tax-deductible local fund at the Greater Kansas City
Community Foundation
- Ensure that 100% of funds raised are used to
support children’s needs
- Coordinate with Kiwanians “on the ground” in
the districts affected to determine how we can best help the Children. Help may include these areas:
- Day care support
- Critical issues for pre-schoolers
- Educational needs of Children K-8
- Backpacks for school-age Children
- Other needs of Young Children
- Publicize the project in the local media
How can Kiwanis clubs and members help?
In closing, this human
tragedy reminds us all of the fragility of life and the importance of
community in rising to challenges. I
know that we will rise to the challenge here, too -- as Americans, and as
Kiwanians.
Yours in Kiwanis,
Whitson J. Kirk, Chair, Metro
Kansas City Kiwanis Council
